I quit my job and moved back: how do you build a new community in Budapest?
Moving back from abroad or going through a big transition scatters your old friend group, and your schedule no longer matches anyone else's. How do you find a community when you're starting over?

If you quit your job, moved back from abroad, or went through some other major transition, you're facing a double challenge: your old friend group has since scattered or moved on to a different rhythm, and your schedule no longer matches a typical work routine. While everyone else works nine to five, you might have free weekday mornings, and oddly enough, that can work in your favor rather than against you.
Make use of your weekday free time
Most communities meet on weekends or evenings, because their members build their lives around a job. If you have free time on weekday mornings or afternoons, you can get into sessions that are otherwise packed with working people, and because fewer people show up midweek, it's easier to actually get to know someone.

Volunteer cycling actions you can join for a single session with no commitment, often held on weekdays.

A Facebook community that regularly organizes daytime, flexibly scheduled meetups, not just evening events.
Don't expect to be back where you were before you left
After a major transition, it's normal for your social life to rebuild from scratch, even if you previously had an extensive friend group in the very same city. Some old connections will stick around, but they won't automatically replace the day-to-day company you need. That has to be rebuilt deliberately, with new communities.
Look for communities that attract people going through a similar shift
Members of digital nomad and startup communities have often just arrived themselves or are mid-transition in some form, so they tend to be more open to meeting someone new than a long-closed, settled friend group. That doesn't mean these are the only communities worth trying, but they're a good starting point if you're rebuilding everything at once.

How long does it take to rebuild a full friend group after a major transition?
Typically around six months before a few regular connections take hold. That's longer than many people expect, but it doesn't mean you're doing something wrong.
Should I only look for communities where everyone's been through a similar transition?
Not necessarily, but it can help a lot at first, since the atmosphere there tends to be more open to new people than in a long-settled group.
What if part of my old friend group is still in Budapest?
It's worth staying in touch with them, but don't rely on them alone: if their rhythm no longer matches yours, you'll still want a new community to cover the day-to-day company you're missing.
