Public speaking clubs in Budapest: where can you practice safely?
How a speaking club works, what happens the first time, and why you can sit in as a guest without saying a word.

Fear of public speaking is among the most common fears out there, and that's exactly why speaking clubs work. It doesn't go away from reading a book about it, it goes away from doing it many times in a setting where nothing goes wrong.
These clubs are effective because they're structured. Every session follows a fixed format, you know in advance when your turn comes, and everyone else in the room is in the same boat.
Where do you find a club like this in Budapest?
- 1Toastmasters Magyarország
A network of speaking clubs across Budapest and Hungary, aimed at developing public speaking and leadership skills. Toastmasters runs on an international methodology, so every club follows the same structure, and feedback is structured too, not just ad hoc opinion. Several clubs operate in Budapest, including English-language ones, and at most you can sit in as a guest for one session.
What happens at a session?
The typical structure has three parts. First come prepared speeches, usually five to seven minutes. Then an improvisation block, where you answer short questions in a minute or two. Finally, feedback, where designated people evaluate what was said.
Feedback always follows the same structure: what worked, what could be different, and a summary. It's not a takedown, it's a method, and that's what makes the criticism bearable.
Do I have to speak as a guest?
No. On your first visit as a guest, you just sit in and watch. Most clubs will ask guests during the improvisation block if they'd like to participate, but "no" is a perfectly acceptable answer.
This is the biggest advantage speaking clubs have over courses: you can try it before paying for or committing to anything. It's worth checking out two or three clubs, since the atmosphere can vary a lot between them.
How long before you see results?
- The first three sessions are about getting used to the situation
- Your first own speech usually comes around the fifth session
- Improvisation improves the fastest, since you practice it every time
- After six months of regular attendance, most people no longer avoid speaking up at work either

Do you have to pay for a speaking club?
The first sessions as a guest are usually free. If you become a member, there's a membership fee that covers the international organization membership and materials. The club can tell you the exact amount.
Is there an English-language speaking club in Budapest?
Yes, several Budapest clubs operate in English. Useful if you're preparing for work presentations in English, or if you don't speak Hungarian.
What if I'm really scared of public speaking?
Then you're in exactly the right place. Most attendees came for that exact reason, and the club's structure is built to help you progress gradually, in small steps.
