LGBTQ+ communities in Budapest: where do you find a safe space?
Where to find welcoming community events in Budapest, what to know in advance, and where to turn if you need more than company.

Most community-finding advice assumes the hard part is courage. As an LGBTQ+ person, though, the question is often something else: where you don't have to explain yourself, and where the shared activity is the point, not the introductions.
This section will be short, because honestly, that's what it is: the number of publicly advertised, open LGBTQ+ communities in Budapest is limited. What we do know, we're giving you precisely.
An open community on our list
- 1Dykes on Hikes Budapest
A lesbian hiking community that organizes regular group hikes around Budapest. The hike format works particularly well here, because it's long, casual, and has neither an introduction round nor a drinking-heavy setting. Programs are advertised on Instagram, and they're open to new participants.
If you know another open LGBTQ+ community in Budapest, let us know and we'll add it to the list. It's free, and we don't ask for anything in return.
What other communities tend to be welcoming?
Not every community needs to be specifically LGBTQ+ focused for you to feel comfortable in it. In our experience, internationally attended, English-speaking groups and activity-centered communities tend to be the most predictable.
- Language exchange evenings, where the crowd is already mixed and international
- Board game communities, where the game is the topic, not your personal life
- Hiking communities, where the program is long and the conversation relaxed
- Volunteer actions, where the shared goal provides the frame
Where do you turn if you need more than company?
This site collects communities, it's not a support service. If you have a legal question, have experienced discrimination, or need psychological support, there are dedicated organizations for that.
Háttér Society is Hungary's longest-running LGBTQ+ organization, and it also runs legal aid and helpline services. It's worth checking their site, since their information is current and expert.

Are there open LGBTQ+ communities in Budapest?
There are, but the number that advertise publicly is limited. Our list currently has one hiking community, and it's also worth looking at internationally attended, activity-centered groups.
How do I know if a community is welcoming?
The best signal is the community's own communication: how they write about their participants, and whether they give a substantive reply to a private message. If you're unsure, ask directly before going.
Do I have to pay to participate?
The programs of the communities listed here are free. Any cost would be the travel there, typically a public transport ticket for a hike.
