Digital nomad communities in Budapest: where do you find company?

Come to Budapest to work for a few months? Here's where to quickly find company, coworking spots, and practical help settling in.

If you've come to Budapest to work for just a few months, you don't have time to slowly integrate somewhere. The classic advice, go to the same place regularly for six months, simply doesn't apply here.

That's why digital nomad communities work differently from the rest. The event calendar is denser, entry is faster, and practical questions are covered too, not just the social side.

Where should you start?

  1. 1
    Budapest Digital Nomads

A Facebook community for digital nomads, where housing and job searches happen alongside regular social event organizing. That three-in-one combination is the point: it doesn't just give you company, it makes the first weeks of moving in easier too. Once you've joined, it's worth using the group's search for a specific question, since it gets lost in the daily flow of posts otherwise.

This category currently has one entry on our list, but that doesn't mean it's all there is. Most nomad communities simply organize as closed groups or through private messages, and don't advertise themselves publicly.

What other communities might be worth considering?

It's worth looking beyond the strictly "nomad" label. Language exchange evenings and startup meetups draw largely the same crowd: international, mobile, English-speaking people. Looking there too will give you a much bigger pool to draw from.

  • Language exchange evenings, where the crowd rotates weekly
  • Startup and tech meetups, where many people are also here temporarily
  • Coworking space social events, which are often only advertised locally
  • Hiking communities, which offer a weekend plan rather than an evening commitment
  • English-language board game nights, where language isn't a barrier

The practical part: what should you know about your residency status?

Hungary offers a separate residence permit for remote workers who are third-country nationals, often referred to as the White Card. Conditions change from time to time, so always check this from an official source, not a forum post.

This isn't relevant for EU citizens, who need a registration certificate for longer stays instead. For both procedures, the immigration office's website is the authoritative source.

How long does it take to find company in Budapest?

If you go to two events a week, you'll typically have familiar faces within three or four weeks. That requires going back to the same events, though, not always trying a new one.

Is English enough, or do I need Hungarian?

English is enough in Budapest's internationally-oriented communities. Language exchange, board games, tech meetups and several hiking communities all operate in English.

Where should I work if I don't want to always sit in a café?

Most coworking spaces offer day passes too, not just monthly memberships. That's useful because it lets you try out the community at different spots before committing.
