3 board game communities in Budapest you can join for free

English- and Hungarian-language board game nights where you can try everything from modern classics to strategy games among new people.

Board games are one of the best excuses to meet people, because the game itself gives you something to talk about, and you don't have to actively hunt for a conversation topic. Several active, free-to-attend board game communities run in Budapest, and we're featuring three you can join regardless of age or experience.

  1. 1
    TIA Game Cave

A free-entry board game community for ages 14 to 99: no membership fee, just show up. The community regularly organizes sessions featuring both modern and classic board games.

  2. 2
    Budapest Board Game Nights

English-language board game nights that rotate between Budapest venues, often board game bars. Open to anyone who'd like to chat and play in English at the same time.

  3. 3
    Board Games in English

An international board game community with over two thousand members that meets several times a week at various game bars and cafés. The selection ranges from modern classics (Ticket to Ride, Catan) to word and strategy games.

Which one should you pick if you've never been to a board game community?

TIA Game Cave is the best starting point if you're after a free, Hungarian-language, membership-free setting. If you'd rather meet people in an international, English-speaking crowd, both Budapest Board Game Nights and Board Games in English are excellent choices: both regularly change venue, so there's always a reason for a new meetup. Board Games in English's larger size means there's a session happening almost every week if you'd like to go more often.

Do I need to bring my own board game?

Not necessary, most sessions have games provided by the organizers or the venue. If you have a favorite, you can of course bring it, but it's not expected.

What age group are these communities aimed at?

TIA Game Cave targets a wide age range (14 to 99), while the international communities are mainly aimed at adults, though neither has a strict age limit.
